What are On-Screen Keyboards?

A virtual keyboard is a software and/or hardware component that allows a user to enter characters. A virtual keyboard can usually be operated with multiple input devices, which may include an actual keyboard, a computer mouse, a headmouse, and an eyemouse. On a desktop PC, the primary purpose of a virtual keyboard is to provide an alternative mechanism for disabled users that can not use a physical keyboard.

Who uses On-Screen Keyboards?

OSKs are a form Assistive Technology (AT), which is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices. AT promotes greater independence for people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks.
