PIKOM


PIKOM, the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry, Malaysia is the association representing the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in Malaysia. Its membership currently stands at over 750 comprising companies involved in a whole spectrum of ICT products and services which commands 80 per cent of the total ICT trade in Malaysia.

PIKOM works to improve the business climate in the interests of all its member companies and to promote industry growth in line with national aspirations.

PIKOM's members include:

  • Suppliers of equipment in computing and telecommunications

  • Software developers and suppliers

  • Providers of professional and educational ICT services

  • Network operators

  • Suppliers of value added services in ICT


By facilitating Malaysia's business growth and competitiveness through application of information technology, PIKOM is positioned to be the voice of the Malaysian ICT industry.



PIKOM was formed in August 1986 with the objective of creating an environment that is conducive to the health, prosperity and competitive nature of the ICT industry. In line with this, PIKOM aims to be a catalyst for the growth of the ICT industry in Malaysia.




PIKOM's objectives are to:



  • Spearhead, promote & coordinate development of resources, professional skills and programs in the local ICT industry.

  • Represent the local ICT industry to the Government and private sector both locally and overseas.

  • Provide a focal forum for solution providers to meet, discuss and solve common problems of the ICT industry and to advance programs for its development.

  • Foster high standards of conduct, service and performance throughout the ICT industry.

  • Obtain, process and disseminate relevant information to the ICT industry.

  • Provide industry and trade related services to members.



PIKOM has taken on the task of growing the size and capability of the ICT industry in Malaysia by creating opportunities for its members as well as all Malaysians to capture the benefits offered by advances in ICT.


PIKOM's focus is based on the following key strategies:





  • Advocacy and promotion.

  • Networking both with other PIKOM members, and with the wider business community and Government.

    • Government relations - to spearhead the ICT industry's support to the government in achieving k-economy status.

    • Building links to other industry organizations, reducing the perceived fragmentation, and achieving a leadership position.

    • Partnering with other members when applicable.



  • Growing Membership Services.

  • Using PIKOM global networks to assist exporters and to facilitate technology transfer.





PIKOM's membership is open to all Malaysian companies who supply ICT products and services in the computing and telecommunications industries. PIKOM offers a range of services and activities, which provide opportunities for informed dialogue and profitable networking. However, non-ICT companies are also welcome to join the Association as associate members.




PIKOM actively represents the IT industry's problems and concerns to the government; acts as the advisory, consultative and coordinating body on many government forum and agencies, including the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS); Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU); Industrial Standards Committee on IT; Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC); and Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA).




PIKOM actively participates in annual dialogues with the Ministry of Finance (Budget Dialogue); Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI); Malaysian Royal Customs and Excise Department; Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM); Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.




1. PIKOM conducts a series of seminars, talks, conferences and industry forum on topical matters of national and policy interests in IT.

2. PIKOM is the official organizer of the largest and the most prestigious IT exhibition in Malaysia - the PIKOM ITX; APRICOT or Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference Operational Technologies, a forum that facilitates knowledge sharing among key Internet builders in the region, with peers and leaders from the Internet community worldwide; as well as the premier PIKOM PC Fair, Malaysia's multi-location PC cash-and-carry event.






PIKOM is a member of ASOCIO, the Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organization, whose past President is Harres Tan, whom is the current chairman of PIKOM. Established in 1984, ASOCIO aims to promote, encourage and foster trade between its various members and to develop the computing industry in the Asian and Oceanian region.


ASOCIO provides linkages to the ICT companies in its member countries. It's General Assembly and Symposium held annually, is a forum for participants to exchange information, develop closer relationships and identify new business opportunities.


Membership in ASOCIO provides PIKOM members with the added opportunity to network with its 12 full members and 6 associate members representing 18 countries in the region and 5 guest members from North America and Europe. As ASOCIO is recognized as the international representative body of the ICT industry in the Asian-Oceanian region, PIKOM is able to leverage from its expertise to position itself in a similar fashion.







PIKOM is a member of the World Information Technology And Services Alliance (WITSA), a consortium of 41 ICT industry associations from economies around the world. WITSA members represent over 97 percent of the world IT market.






Founded in 1978 and originally known as the World Computing Services Industry Association, WITSA has increasingly assumed an active advocacy role in international public policy issues affecting the creation of a robust global information infrastructure.


WITSA has a real impact on the global ICT environment. It strengthens the industry at large by promoting a level playing field and by voicing the concerns of the international ICT community in multilateral organizations. These include the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the G-8 and other international forum where policies affecting industry interests are developed.








Asia & Pacific Internet Association (APIA) , established in 1997, is a non-profit trade association whose aim is to promote the business interests of the Internet-related service industry in the Asia Pacific region.






Its Mission is:
- To ensure the future and stability of APRICOT.
- To build human resource infrastructure for the Internet and to foster the efficient, stable, and sustainable development of the Internet in the Asia Pacific region.


APIA is now committed to the stabilisation of the APRICOT operation and to continue to play a key role in educating and training the Internet operators in Asia Pacific region.

This is done by providing and promoting educational opportunities by hosting, endorsing, or co-organizing conferences, seminars, forums, workshops, and other training events.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the functioning of APIA, including keeping APIA true to its mission.

PIKOM is the Secretariat of the APIA.
