YKGI was incorporated by Yung Kong Company Sdn Bhd (YK) in 1977. It remained dormant until February 1983 when YK and Marubeni Corporation, Japan jointly participated in the ownership of YKGI.
In February 1984, YKGI commenced operations in the manufacture and distribution of galvanised steel and roofing sheets. Initial production method is by sheet-by-sheet galvanizing.
In 1991, YKGI expanded into shearing of plain sheets and roll forming production and the roll forming production ceased operation in Dec 1998.
In 1992, the Company upgraded its galvanising line to the coil-to-coil galvanising method. Coils are galvanised and rolled into coils, shearing and corrugating are done on separate lines.
In 1996, the Company ventured into prepainted operations by installing a new CCL (Continuous Colour Coating Line). The production of colour coated steel sheets commenced in July 1996.
The Company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Magic Network Sdn Bhd (MN) was formed in July 1996 to undertake the marketing and sales function for YKGI.
YKGI was successfully listed on the Second Board of KLSE on 2 October 1997.
YKGI has on March 10, 1998 acquired 65% equity of a subsidiary, Star Shine Marketing Sdn Bhd (SSM), which was incorporated on February 21, 1998. The function of the subsidiary is marketing, sales and services for YKGI products for the West Malaysian region.
In October 1998, YKGI installed a new CGL (Continuous Galvanising Line).
In October 1999, YKGI installed another small galvanising line MGL (Mini Continuous Galvanising Line).
YKGI has on February 2, 2000 acquired 70% equity of another subsidiary, Integrated Coil Coating Industries Sdn Bhd (ICCI), which was incorporated on January 13, 2000. The activities of the subsidiary is manufacturing of GI and PPGI coils and other metals. The Multipurpose Line started commercial productions in January 2002. Subsequently, YKGI acquired 30% of ICCI to make it wholly owned by YKGI on 3 October 2005.
In December 20, 2001, Star Shine Global Trading Sdn Bhd (SSGT) was incorporated as a 51% subsidiary of SSM to carry out trading of processed coils and sheets and other merchandise.
In May 2002, YKGI was accredited with ISO9001:2000; upgraded from ISO9002:1994.
In January 2003, YKGI was transferred to Main Board of KLSE.
YKGI Office in Sejingkat refurbished and upgraded. It was officiated by YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, on 18 February 2003.
In April 2003, YK2 signed contract to purchase of new Non Oxidised Furnace Continuous Galvanising Line (NOF CGL).
In June 26, 2003 Star Shine Steel Products Sdn. Bhd. (SSP) was incorporated as a 51% subsidiary of SSM to carry out trading of long products and other merchandise.
